The Silver Keys Clarinet Quartet will celebrate that very American holiday – Mothers’ Day – with selections from American composers. The Callaloo Café’s traditional Tobago Sunday luncheon will ad a nice contrast, and the gallery will be showing something unusual – biomedical art work by students at the Cleveland Institute of Art. So bring Mom to something old, something new and something out of the ordinary. William Meyer, Emily Lada, Lindsay Charnofsky and Victoria Marra are all veteran performers; they h…ave appeared with Cleveland Ballet, Opera Cleveland, the Blossom Festival Band, Red (an orchestra) and CityMusic, in venues from Severance Hall to the Rock Hall. And for Mothers’ Day, they’ll play some Gershwin, some Mancini, some Sousa and some others – plus leading a singalong of the classic “Take Me Out To The Ballgame.” All M4M concerts are held on Sunday afternoon at 4 pm, and are free, thanks to generous support from Local 4 Music Fund, the Music Performance Trust Fund, the Arts Collinwood Friends’ Committee, Cuyahoga Arts and Culture, and Ohio Arts Council. Click here to confirm your attendance at this lovely Mother’s Day happening.

Biomedical Art is more than just the sign at the crossroads of art and science. It is the fusion of content and visual display of scientific information. The careful study of the minutiae of phenomena expressed through boundary-breaking art methods grounded on a foundation of tradition, convention, and communication.

The 2013 graduating Biomedical Art class at the Cleveland Institute of Art is inspired by the sciences such as anatomy, medicine, biology, anthropology, and zoology, among other diverse areas. Visually communicating these important concepts in a clear, refined manner is the goal of the Biomedical Artist. The CIA BMA students have interests and specializations ranging from educational game design, interactive mobile applications, stunning animations, sculptural exhibit design, as well as socially conscious and informational art as activism.

Artist Talk April 18, 7pm

Arts Collinwood is pleased to present, Das Wird Sich Alles Finden [everything will turn out alright] an exhibition of international artists. The German title speaks to the origin of the exhibit. In the spring of 2011, a group of international artists were selected to take part in an exhibition called The Berlin Project. The original call out stated: ‘The aim of this exhibition is [sic] selecting artists who dedicate their time to create original works who distinguish themselves through technical quality, innovation and sensibility toward the detail.’

Weeks went by and the organizers disappeared without contacting the artists or returning their fee. The artists were left without a show. Frustrated but not defeated, the artists organized themselves and set up a touring exhibition as a way of making things right. The title translates as ‘Everything Will Turn Out Alright’, a sentiment that runs though the project. A curatorial method of picking up these disparate pieces has allowed the exhibition to come together in new and unexpected ways that examine despondency, closure, hope, and accomplishment.

This exhibit, which first showed in Sheffield, UK at Bloc Projects, has expanded its scope for the Arts Collinwood location. Cataloged and curated by Christopher L. Richards, additional works have been added by many of the sixteen artists to give a greater sense of what may have initially drawn the original organizers to these particular artists.

The Cleveland exhibition will take place April 5 thru the 27, 2013 at Arts Collinwood. The artists included are: Kayde Anobile (London, England), Patricia Casey (Sydney, Australia), Yoonsuk Choi (London, England), Amanda Crozat (Paris, France), Niall Dooley (Dublin, Ireland), Lesley Guy (Sheffield, England), Mark Keffer (Cleveland, OH, USA), Robert Lang (Bristol, England), Krystel Marios (Berlin, Germany), Jonathan McFadden (Minnesota, USA), Haroob Mullick (London, England), Lydia Panas (Pennsylvania, USA), Julia Schmid (Berlin, Germany), Mercedes Teixido (California, USA), Joshua Thompson (Hong Kong, China) and Margeret Withers (NYC, USA).

Half Empty

Liz Maugans & Dale Goode

January 4th – January 26th

Opening Reception: Jan 4th, 6-9pm

Arts Collinwood is pleased to announce Half Empty, an exhibition of work by Cleveland artists Liz Maugans and Dale Goode. The show incorporates photography, video, printmaking and an interactive, community-based project in an effort to address, among other things, the state of vacancy and renewal that is so prevalent in our current consciousness.

Maugans, will be showing work from Desperate Signs: inspired by collected homemade signs found in urban spaces. She recreated the messages by carving them into wood stressing the human tension in our current socio-economic state. These text-based prints as well as lighted signage incorporate input from members of the viewing public.

Maugans is a co-founder and Executive Director of Zygote Press, Inc. She received a BFA from Kent State University and an MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art. She is a recent recipient of the Creative Workforce Fellowship from Community Partnership for Arts and Culture. Her work is in the collections of Progressive Insurance, BF Goodrich, Cleveland State University and The Riffe Center for Government and the Arts.

Goode’s black and white photographs of abandoned, decaying industrial interiors convey a haunting beauty that brings forth the complex history and, by implication, the open-ended future of the industrial realities of our area. This, of course, impacts all aspects of life here. His raw video footage is equally engaging and contains a thought-provoking balance of decay and hope. Goode is a painter, muralist, sculptor, photographer and videographer. A life-long Clevelander, he has shown extensively in the area for several decades, including at the The Butler Institute of American Art. He was commissioned by famed boxing promoter Don King to create a mural, Apostles of Peace, incorporating images of John and Robert Kennedy, Martin Luther King Jr., and Jimmy Carter. His work is in many collections, including Progressive Insurance.

Artist Jef Scharf has devised a process that can take a drawing to film, then to a screen and finally to print, on paper, a shirt, a table – whatever. The process depends on a silk-screen box named Shirley T and an exposure box for screens named Rose Louise. (No, I don’t know why; if you take the class, you can ask.) In the class he will teach at Arts Collinwood, students begin by making drawings which are collected, scanned and cobbled into a single film for screen burning, which takes about two hours for exposing and washing out the screen (probably tedious for children, says Jef, but “adults and scientists” would enjoy it.” Then the image is printed, on whatever the chosen medium is, and hung to dry until . . . everyone goes home. A bundle of t-shirts have been generously donated by Gallery Wolfy Part II for the workshop. A limited number of shirts will be available for class participants to keep. Shirley T and Rose Louise will take up permanent residence at Arts Collinwood, to be used whenever someone is inspired to do another workshop. This one is funded by an Artists in Residence grant, thanks to the Kresge and Ford foundations, and supported by Arts Collinwood, CPAC, NSDC, LINC, Zygote Press, Bruce Edwards, Pat Deering and J.C.

People are encouraged to bring ideas for the shirts that we could execute and expose on some screens. think light ink on black shirts.

The workshop will begin at 10am and go until 4pm with a 30 minute break around 12:30 or so. The class is free and no prior registration is necessary. Download Flyer Here

“Quantum Space”, paintings by James Massena March

Friday, October 12 – November 3

Opening Reception – Friday, October 12, 6pm-9pm

James March will be exhibiting examples of his continuing explorations of pictorial space in vivid, geometric abstractions. He will include recent paintings from several different series, with many coming from the Quantum series. One such painting will be Event Horizon, a 7×10 ft. work that explores “the warping of space-time in the vicinity of a black hole.” Additional concerns evident in the work include structure and composition, the formal and expressive potential of color relationships, and a precise, complex method of paint application. Despite the appearance of a precisely delineated plan, an intuitive process of exploration is generally how the work comes about. The resulting images are an imaginative, even disorienting, blend of physical and mental spaces.

James March was born in Cleveland and attended the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art. He received a BA from Cleveland State University and an MFA from Kent State University. He has exhibited extensively on a regional and national level. His work is in the collections of PNC Bank, Cleveland State University and Case Western Reserve University, among others, and was awarded the Ohio Arts Prize for Painting in 2009.

This exhibition is presented courtesy of Tregoning and Co. Gallery.
