Dark Matter, work by Robert Thurmer

On view at Arts Collinwood Gallery – Friday, May 11 – Sunday, June 4

Opening Reception – Friday, May 11, 6pm-10pm

Robert Thurmer, is an artist who lives and works in Cleveland.  This artist has shown his thought-provoking work at numerous shows locally, nationally and internationally. His current works to be featured at Arts Collinwood examine how we recognize art objects.

“Specifically: what are the markers for ‘art object’ that are generally recognized without specialized privileged information. To explore these ideas, I started making these recent sculptures in an attempt to make my own ‘found’ art, what I like to call paraphrastic objects – stand-ins that refer to certain kinds of conventional art objects.”  Robert Thurmer

Join Robert Thurmer and guests at the Gallery at Arts Collinwood to view sculptures at the opening reception on May 11th.  The Café at Arts Collinwood will be open as well for dinner and drinks before, during and after the opening from 6pm-10pm.

Robert will speak at a Gallery Talk hosted by local artist, professor, writer and Arts Collinwood Gallery Committee member, Dan Tranberg on Thursday, May 17th at 7pm at Arts Collinwood.

Arts Collinwood is pleased to present the 10th Annual Waterloo Arts Fest on June 30, 2012 from noon-7pm.  Join art vendors, bands, DJs, performers, food vendors and a host of other attractions in the N. Collinwood neighborhood of Cleveland.  Lots to do for people of all ages.  Applications to participate as a vendor or performer can be found at www.waterlooartsfest.com.

The Marseille Companion

Stands as a visual journey through the soul of the artist. In a recreation of what is known as “Star Spread” – a five card spread, using the formidable archetypes and virtues prescribed in The Tarot De Marseille. One of the oldest known and complete tarot deck in human history, originated in Italy during the 15th century. Initially used as a simple card game to pass the time, the tarot has picked up many mysticisms of its power and intended use over centuries. The Series of works depict a visceral portrayal of ones reality and forces the painter to question the very foundation of ones existence against the universal values found in the cards.

“For me the tarot is sacred. It has a being and a definitive purpose which lends to its divinity, making it an illuminating traveling companion.”  -Dustin Nowlin

Through my work I explore visual narrative derived from traditional but also conceptual practices and techniques. Overall I’ve seen my works converge on many types of surfaces including canvas, wood,  paper, metal, glass, film, and installation. In my approach I attempt to reach a level of consciousness, collective of, and responsive to the world at large, in order to achieve a representation which is of relevancy and veracity to the viewer and to myself. Each brushstroke is the result of an applicable but  interchangeable set of values or virtues addressed in a given dialogue or piece. All of which are mostly expressed in a raw form of expressionism based in African, Latin, and non-western diaspora, delivered by an American point of view in the modern age.

Join Dustin Nowlin and guests at the Arts Collinwood Gallery to view the paintings at the opening reception on April 13th.  The Café at Arts Collinwood will be open as well for dinner/drinks before and during the opening from 6pm-10pm.

A Gallery Talk with the artist will be hosted by local artist, writer and Arts Collinwood Gallery          Committee member, Douglas Max Utter on  Thursday, April 26th at 7pm at Arts Collinwood.

Join Arts Collinwood on Saturday, March 31st at 7:30pm for a concert by Chelsea Crowell, a third generation songwriter, raised in both Nashville, TN and New York City just completed her second solo album Crystal City. She has been featured on NPR’s radio program, All Things Considered as well as a filmed live performance for a PBS documentary about southern roots music, featured on movie soundtracks and ever recording new material. She has Played to audiences of 7,000 as well as seven and Ms. Crowell seems to glide between the two worlds with ease. Crowell’s first solo record was named top ten of the year by the Nashville Scene, and though never fully promoted, gained nods from such publications as the L.A. Times and No Depression. Her ability to acclimate to any situation, yet silence a crowd with a nod of the head suggests she comes by her talents both by hard work and bloodlines. Introspective, heartfelt, humorous and humble, Crowell forges her own cross over sound. As she emerges from the daunting shadows of her family (father, Rodney Crowell, Mother; Rosanne Cash and Grandfather; Johnny Cash) and with the completion of the already acclaimed album Crystal City, she begins touring, starting in europe mid October. Her talent and her ability to acclimate suggest half nature (the familial DNA) and half nurture (growing up on tour busses) and certainly will serve her as she embarks on what inevitably is a successful, life long career.  To purchase tickets visit ticketweb.com.
